We left Steamboat Creek at 7:30. We had calculated the tides and current to try and get to each trouble spot at a good time.

Heading into Elliot Cut.
Elliot Cut
We had times Elliot Cut perfectly! We went thru with no noticeable current. That's a first for us.
Where did the water go? |
As we passed Elliot Cut, we slowed down so we would give the water time to rise north of the Ben Sawyer Bridge. We know the water is too shallow for us to go thru on a low tide. So we will go very slow and wait for the water. Rocking B is in front of us and they have heard over the VHF, that several boats are grounded in the shallow area. And a barge is grounded and will make passing thru even more difficult. Even if the water is up, the area will be difficult to pass thru with a barge in the way. So we slow down even more. Rocking B draws less water than we do and they finally get thru and give us depth readings. We should have enough water when the barge gets out of the way.
We saw lots of big pretty boats in Charleston |
And lots of pretty houses along the Battery |
USS Yorktown |

Castle Pickney |

This tug has a long line going back to its barge. That would be hard to see in the dark. |
Fort Sumter |
This barge had run aground north of the bridge and held up boat traffic for hours. We knew when he got thru we could go. Yeah |
He had to wait for the US Coast Guard to board him before he could go into Charleston Harbor. So he had to find a place to park. Not an easy thing for him to do. |
North of this bridge is notorious for having shallow water. You can see in the picture below, we were not following the chartplotter. We were following the markers in the water and watching the depth very closely.
The really shallow water is at Breach Inlet between markers 119 and 117A. So we are in the middle of it now. |
Pretty houses along Isle of Palm. |

Pretty |

This house is playing hide and seek. |

Rocking B anchored in Price Creek. Yes that's the ocean behind him. And we are not far away. We got to Price Creek at 4:30. That's a very long day for us. And one filled with currents, tides and shallow water. We traveled about 45nm at 5.0kts.

Sea Salt checking out the anchorage |
Beautiful sunrise the next morning, as we are leaving.
We left at 5:55. We need to get to McClellanville with a rising tide so we can get thru the shallow water.
And then comes the fog. As soon as we got out into the ICW, the fog rolled in. We traveled in fog for a long time. We did not meet any boats, so that was good. |
That's the sun. |
This man was fly fishing on a paddleboard. He has balance! |
Finally we can see boats again! |
I thought of my daddy when I saw this house with all the birdhouses outside! |
Santee Swamp, but it looks pretty from the water. |
Waves in the Minim River . This is another problem area, but we were ok. |
And here is the floating swing bridge. |
And this is the other side of the water. |
Very shallow water here. Entering Winyah Bay.
We had some problems getting thru here. Sea Salt tried and decided it was too shallow, so they waited for the tide to come in. We followed Rocking B out and Margaret kept giving us depth readings. Richard and Connie were watching our path and we were evidently over just enough to find the deeper water. Sea Salt came out right after us and had no problems. Great!

The water was a little choppy. |

Pretty houses heading to Georgetown |

Shrimp boat in the harbor |
There was a fire here and nothing has been done to rebuild since we were here in October. |
Pretty |
B anchored around the corner from the waterfront. The waterfront was too crowded for us, but Sea Salt found a place. |
And we did have a beautiful sunset. |
Here we are at anchorage in Georgetown |
We got here at about 3:00. We had traveled 9 hours again and went about 42nm at 4.7kts. We had current against us all day. How do we do that?
We spent 3 nights in Georgetown. Lauren came down to visit a friend and spent one night on the boat with us. We went out to eat with her and Sea Salt. We had a great time with her and she finally got her basil plant. I took some sprigs from a plant in Marathon and rooted them in water. When we got to Vero, we bought a pot and I planted them. They have been doing great! I hope that's not the only reason she came to the boat!
Lauren and her friend took a daytrip to Charleston so B and SS came to our boat for late lunch/early dinner. We had sausage, peppers, and onion hoagies with Texas caviar by Margaret and apple crisp by Connie. Everything was so good. Our meals are always like that good food and great company.
Tomorrow we will go to the fuel dock and fill up with diesel and then head up the Waccamaw River. Love traveling on the beautiful Waccamaw!
