Georgia On Our Mind 2016 Part 1

As soon as we passed the FL/GA stateline in the middle of the St Mary's Inlet we said bye to FL and hello to GA. We passed by a beautiful anchorage at Cumberland Island. It's a great place to spend time--a day or longer.
This Coast Guard ship was sitting in the inlet.

The Naval Submarine Base is near St Mary's, GA. It is the home port for the U S Navy Fleet ballistic missile nuclear submarines armed with Trident missile nuclear weapons. The base covers about 16,000 acres and the ICW passes right by it. The USS Florida and USS Georgia and several others have King's Bay as their home ports. We can see the base when we anchor at Cumberland Island.

We always see at least one patrol boat. Yes, that's a submarine behind them.

Degaussing range at the base. Degaussing is the process of decreasing or eliminating the magnetic field on the surface of the submarine.

Close up
If a submarine is entering the harbor all ICW traffic is stopped. We had had to wait several times as we pass by the base. Don't want to disobey the guys with the fast boat and guns!
As you can see, this is a survey boat for the Army Corps of Engineers. He was doing water depth readings up and down the ICW. We kept hearing him on the radio announcing where he was taking readings. Its good to see him, he needs to find the skinny water so it can be dredged.

Looks very pretty from up. And down too.

We got to the Frederica River at about 2pm. We had traveled about 7 hours, at 5.5kts and traveled about 39nm. We saw a lot of rays jumping out of the water. We have been told they do this when they are mating. Don't know. We also saw lots of shrimp boats. Made me hungry for fried shrimp or blackened, or grilled or...

On, I can't forget the state bird of GA. It's the green headed horse fly. They were terrible. So bad that we finally went inside to get away from them. They bite and it hurts! We did find out that they don't like Skin So Soft. They will still fly around the flybridge, but they wont land on you. Good to know.
Great way to end the day
